Baliyang Cultural Program
Lalor Tennis Club
Meaning ‘bat’ in Woi Wurrung, the Baliyang Cultural Program aims to help reactivate community participation at Lalor Tennis Club by creating a safe space for locals of all cultures to connect with each other and to Country through a series of cultural sessions run by local Elders and First Nations mob.
The Baliyang Cultural Program promotes the club as a place where locals can gather, learn and connect, where families can relax and children can play, where local mob can gather, share in culture and reconnect to Country, and where all cultures feel welcome.
In 2025 we were successful in receiving a community grant from the City of Whittlesea on behalf of Lalor Tennis Club to run a series of cultural workshops held at the new Indigenous garden that we created.
From organising the launch and smoking ceremony, to looking after the communications, promotion, design, social media, invites and coordinating the events themselves, we looked after every aspect of this project.
The sessions included a planting day with a Welcome to Country and yidaki by Wurundjeri man Colin Hunter Jr Jr, learning about the traditional uses of the plants and storytelling by Uncle Ian Goolagong, a mural painting workshop with Aunty Carol Evans and a bush tucker cooking class held around the yarning circle and firepit.
Future events include cultural games and music and dance.
