Cultural Workshops

Cultural Gardens offers a range of cultural workshops run by our First Nations facilitators and Indigenous plant experts.

Experience First Nations culture and connect with Country in one of our hands-on, interactive sessions where you will learn about Aboriginal art, music, storytelling, Indigenous plants and bush tucker.

We come to you!
Sessions can be held indoors or outside in your garden

  • Bush Tucker Cooking

    Bush Tucker Cooking

    Learn to cook using native edible plants and engage in a sensory experience. Our workshops include hands-on preparation, degustation and recipes to take home with you.
    We cater to all dietary requirements.

  • Indigenous Plants Workshop

    Learn about endemic Indigenous plants and how to care for them.
    Choose between a seed planting activity or a seed ball making session to take with you and plant at home.

  • Jewellery Making

    Get crafting using gumnuts, native seeds and emu feathers to make beautiful necklaces, bracelets, earrings and keyrings that you can take home. We provide the materials, all you need to do is bring your imagination!

  • Emu Egg Decorating

    Learn about the importance of emus and emu eggs in creation stories. Create and decorate bases for your eggs. Draft your design and then decorate your emu egg to take home.

    (+ $15 per participant)

  • Weaving

    Introduction to weaving. Learn how to make baskets, bracelets and earrings using starter coils using different patterns and techniques.
    Emu feathers can also be incorporated.

  • Pollinators and Bug Hotels

    Learn about native pollinators and the importance of bugs, plants and environments that attract pollinators. Make your own bug hotels out of sticks, plants, flowers and bark and then decorate them.

  • Music making and Clapstick decoration

    Make music using different traditional instruments, learn songs in language, and decorate your own clapsticks to take home using woodburning or painting methods.

    (+ $15 per clapsticks per participant)

  • Ochre Painting

    Learn about ochre, the traditional uses of ochre and how to crush and mix it using traditional ochre sourced by Aunty April Clarke. Learn Aboriginal symbols and paint on paper, canvas and/or bark.

  • Sensory clay art

    Use sticks, flowers, gumnuts and leaves to make clay creations inspired by nature. Learn about tracking different animals and their prints and recreate them using clay. Create patterns using Aboriginal symbols.

  • Medicinal and ceremonial uses of plants

    Learn about some of the medicinal and ceremonial uses of plants in your area, incorporating storytelling and examples of plants. Have a go at crushing, learn how different medicines were made, and make and try medicinal tea. Discuss the ways certain plants were used in ceremony.

  • Native flower art

    Forage native flowers, learn about their traditional uses, and make your own art using flower pressing methods, smash art on calico bags and cards, petal painting, and using the flowers as dyes to colour different materials.

  • Scrapbooking

    Use recycled and upcycled items to create your own scrapbook or family photo book and practice mindfulness and connection.

Mob-only workshops

We also offer mob-only workshops where we help pass on traditional knowledge and provide a safe space for First Nations people to connect and learn.

We offer mob pricing as well, starting from $600+GST for a one-hour session or $800+GST for a three-hour session.
